The age of the American Empire is nearing its end. Our eclipse will
come not from foreign competition so much as by our own inability
to deal with the very issues we have created: overpopulation, pollution,
over-consumption of natural resources, social competition instead
of cooperation, unsustainable personal and national economic policies,
a nation increasingly divided against itself: haves versus have-nots,
blue versus red, conservative versus liberal. Will we fight desperately
to cling to whatever scraps of power and influence are left, or
can we search for new paradigms that can effectively change our
course from a society based on materialism to one based on spiritual
and philosophical values.
